Cuando se anunciaron los nominados de 2026 para el Salón de la Fama del Rock & Roll el miércoles (25 de febrero), pocos prestaron mucha atención al hecho de que las mujeres estaban bien representadas entre los candidatos. Mariah Carey, Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, P!nk y Shakira fueron todas nominadas, al igual que el grupo británico Sade, liderado por Sade Adu.
Así es como el Salón del Rock ha funcionado durante varios años. Cada uno de los últimos cuatro grupos de homenajeados ha incluido al menos a cuatro mujeres (o grupos que incluyen mujeres) en las diversas categorías de incorporación.
No siempre fue así. Cuando se anunció la primera clase en 1986, los 10 artistas homenajeados fueron hombres: Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard y Elvis Presley.
El Salón del Rock podría haber añadido algo de diversidad de género ese año con sus otras selecciones, pero también esos fueron todos hombres. Los primeros homenajeados por influencia temprana (una categoría ahora llamada influencia musical) fueron Jimmie Rodgers, Jimmy Yancey y Robert Johnson. Las primeras selecciones de no intérpretes (ahora llamadas Premio Ahmet Ertegun) fueron Alan Freed, John Hammond y Sam Phillips.
Tampoco hubo mujeres entre los homenajeados en 1992, 2001, 2003, 2004 y 2016. John Sykes, presidente de la Fundación del Salón de la Fama del Rock & Roll, ha hecho de la diversificación en términos de sexo, género musical y líneas raciales una prioridad. Por lo tanto, es probable que nunca volvamos a ver un grupo de agasajados compuesto únicamente por hombres.
